Volunteer for Hope

Dedicated Volunteers, Lifesavers
Make a Difference
As a small team we rely on a wonderful group of volunteers to help us raise the funds that we then put into life-changing research at our local universities and care at the Hope Cancer Trials Centre in the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
If you are able to spare some time, we are looking for people that can promote and advocate for Hope in their local community and anyone that would like to fundraise on our behalf – fundraising can be done in whatever way suits you best. Please see our fundraising guide for help and inspiration should you need it.
If direct advocacy and fundraising is not for you there are a number of possibilities throughout the year for those who want to help out shaking buckets or running a stall at a Hope event.
Meet our Volunteer Ambassadors
Dorothy Tomlinson from Peatling Magna
I have been volunteering in various roles since I was 14, starting as secretary of my local young people’s group and becoming the volunteer editor of their regional and national magazines!. I was a local magistrate for 24 years and I began to volunteer at Hope Against Cancer in 2004.
The benefits of volunteering are huge. You feel like you are giving something which also gives back to you. By volunteering I have been able to experience events and places that I would not have done otherwise and seeing the success of Hope Against Cancer and the path it has gone on is extremely rewarding.
Esther Hooley from Thorpe Satchville
I was diagnosed with stage 4 clear cell carcinoma cancer in January 2024.
Cancer changes you. It makes you appreciate every moment of life and I wanted to help others get through the journey. I came across Hope Against Cancer just as I was building a new life for myself. The work they do to raise funds for critical research in this field is admirable and I wanted to help spread awareness of the charity in order to help raise valuable funds for such a worthwhile cause.
Richard Hooley from Thorpe Satchville
The opportunity to help raise awareness and funds for Hope Against Cancer is a task I take on with enthusiasm.
The shock of Esther’s emergency admission for surgery through A&E, then emerging with a stoma was completely unexpected. Add to that a diagnosis of Clear Cell Carcinoma in the bowel it was a frightening scenario. The care and professionalism of all the staff at LRI have saved her life several times since that first emergency and I have felt completely unable to help in any way.
As Leicester is a major cancer research hub and funding for cancer care and research is vital in the quest for cure and prevention this is just my small way of paying back for all the care Esther has received.
Anne Goadby from Wigston
I have been a volunteer for Hope for about 8-9 years.
Once I retired I knew I wanted to support a charity. I was so fortunate to meet Tracey Hallam, whose enthusiasm and energy motivated me.
As a former nurse, Hope seemed the perfect charity to support.
I love being a volunteer, over the years we have met some wonderful inspiring individuals and been part of some amazing fundraising projects.
David Goadby from Wigston
I became a Volunteer/Ambassador a number of years ago after hearing of the vital cutting-edge research that was being funded by Hope locally here in the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Over the years I have taken part in a number of activities and also helped on the side lines. We have heard so many stories from people over the years, telling how they have benefitted from the amazing work on the cancer wards as a consequence of Hope Against Cancer Funding. Most families are affected by cancer at some stage or other, ours included, so I feel very strongly about the need to continue helping this great charity.
If you need help to create something in your community or if you would like add your name to those willing to join us at an event, please complete our Volunteer Form or contact one of our Community and Corporate Managers.
